Roots

(status. last rev. October 2019, believed finalized)

It has been mentioned before that Lithops can produce long and strong tap roots if given the opportunity to do so ... So it is always recommended to plant Lithops in tall pots to give them root run.
This does, in no way, not mean that they won't grow well in pots that are not extremely tall, but a decent root run helps.
I do grow Lithops in small 5.5 cm pots as well as in home made pots, two glued together. It works equally well.
There is a side note however.
I noticed that Lithops in very tall pots have a tendency to stretch themselves as if they were etiolating. I have no explanation for this Also the "split" is developing like the famous type of deep "keyhole" fissure where the "bottom" (Meristem) of the plant seems to sink away. very strange.

Here are some examples:

- Strong tap roots on young Lithops:

- Strong root growth after trimming the roots:

- Extremely long root development if given space. The container is a plastic sleeve of joints sealant. It is roughly 16-17 cm tall.
